03-13-13 Appetizer

2013 03-13 ApetizerI guess I'm taking you to Portugal for a few days. Deb and I visited in 2010. Frankly, Portugal has been one of my favorite European travel experiences. And the food helped. I am not a foodie but I still remember several of the meals we ate during our stay. Wonderful!

11-03-12 Bread Art

This macro photo of a sampling of Watertown chef Bill Zubke's beautiful bread was taken by Scott Shephard.I am teaching a little bit about food photography in my studio photography class and that has sent me in quest of photos I've taken that might illustrate the art and practice of making food look good in photos, which is rarely easy.Bill Zubke's buns are always photogenic, however, as these detectible samples demonstrate.

05-09-12 Belgian Delicacies

I'm not sure if lust makes the list of mortal or deadly sins. And I'm not sure that having a profound desire for real whipped cream and fresh cherries piled on top of a freshly cooked waffle right now constitutes lust. I suppose I could look all of this up but I don't want to know the answer. This delicious breakfast was served in a small cafe in the beautiful city of Brugge, Belgium. Deb and I were there a few years ago and I found this photo as I was working on cleaning up old, unnecessary things on my computer. But Belgian waffles are necessary and so is the photo. But, alas, my breakfast of oatmeal and skim milk is calling me. That's what I have almost every morning when I am home. Fidelity, of course, is no sin. It is a virtue. . . .Canon 5DII 1/200s f/2.5 ISO500 50mm (Canon 50mm 1.2L)

Well Musseled

2012 04-08 Well MusseledI apologize for the bad pun in the title of this post - I couldn't resist. The mussels were one of the many delicacies we enjoyed on our visit to Friday Harbor, Washington.

The Other Half

Onion cross section photo by Watertown, SD, photographer Scott ShephardOne half ended up diced for our clam chowder soup. The other half ended up on the blog. I hadn't planned on taking a food photo but the symmetrical design struck me as worth of a closer look. This was shot with a 100mm macro lens in light that filtered in through our patio doors. I put the onion on a dark red cushion from a nearby bench and I think it provides a pretty good backdrop.

12-01-11 Live To Eat?

This is a beautifully served creme brûlée that my wife had while we were staying in Rothenburg O.D.T. Here's what I had. (Click)Do we live to eat or eat to live? When Deb and I travel, it's a little of each. (And that's not Cool Whip on the right - it's real whipped cream!)

Presentation Is Everything

When Bill and Cathy Zubke cook, presentation is important. But the taste is really what it is all about. And I can tell you that this salad, prepared as part of an amazing meal at Lake Okoboji, was a brilliant way to start our feast.

Garlic Soup With Bread & Egg

I never used to be an adventurous gourmand. And I don't eat bugs and smelly fruit like that guy on the Food Network. But I am more willing to order mysterious things from menus when traveling in Europe these days.In this case, I ordered what the menu said was "garlic soup with bread and eggs." I assumed the eggs would be stirred in like they are in egg drop soup. I thought the bread would be served on the side. Imagine my surprise when what you see here was served. It was marvelous. I would like a bowl right now. Anyone know where I can get something like this?

Fresh, Grilled Salmon

To offer a bit of a contrast to my "Bangers and Mash" post from a few days ago, I thought I'd show you the kind of food I ate while in Portugal. This excellent meal was served in a small, unassuming restaurant that we visited twice while in Lisbon. Everything was fresh and very good. It may be crass to talk about prices but I think I paid around $10 for this.Check out some of my London/Portugal 2010 trip photos here

Bangers and Mash

I don't play with my food much any more. But I do take photos of it when I'm traveling, especially if I encounter a particularly delightful meal. This meal qualified, though it may seem gross or obscene to some of you. Bangers and mash? Yes, that's what they call it in England. Americans would call it sausages and mashed potatoes and probably wouldn't serve it this way. Presentation is everything!Check out some of my London/Portugal 2010 trip photos here
