03-19-15 Passport Portrait
By Scott Shephard
The last three posts were of South Dakota's most famous "great faces." But here's another great face, this time of oldest son Brian, who was posing for a passport photo in April, 2003. This was done in preparation for his year in Japan.
I wouldn't normally think of a passport photo as a portrait given that I think a portrait attempts to capture something more than a likeness, which is all a passport requires.
But there is something more here. Brian's relaxed confidence says something about who he is at this time in his life. And I also think it says something about his relationship with me, both as the photographer and his father.
I suspect that the love and respect I have for Brian affects what I see when I look at this photo. You may just see a likeness. Such is the nature of art: what we see and how we see it is always colored by our own experiences and sensibilities.
