04-04-15 Contrail
By Scott Shephard
I was up at 3 am this morning, out of the house and on the road by 4 am so I could be at Lonesome Lake to photograph the lunar eclipse. It was an amazing morning to be in a rural and largely unpopulated part of our state. It was cool and windless. The only sounds I heard were the crunch of my shoes on the frosty grass and the cries of waterfowl getting ready for another day.
The moon performed well throughout the eclipse though the moonset was obscured by clouds. Oh well. Earlier, as I was getting my camera on the tripod, I figured that even if I didn't get any good photos, the effort and the outing were worth it.
I was in my truck heading towards home into a very bright sunrise when I saw this pickup coming. The strong low light and the total lack of wind left a contrail of dust that lingered for miles.
I took 65 photos of the moon and one of this truck. And the shot of the truck is this morning's favorite.
