08-14-17 Nice Curves, Too

The saying is that "the shortest distance between two points is a straight line." This photo shows that highway 16A in the Black Hills of South Dakota doesn't necessarily exemplify this idea. In fact, from the air this short stretch of highway looks a little more like a meandering river.
"Meandering" might be a good description of the highway envisioned by Peter Norbeck. I talked about the reason for this in yesterday's post and will say again that 16A and other roads that are part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway are intended to slow you down. If you slow down, you might see deer, coyotes and other native animals. You might even see the trees instead of seeing the forest.
