22.04.28 Bookish
By Scott Shephard
Maggie is a challenging subject to photograph because when she isn’t sleeping or eating, she is generally on the move. But in this photo Maggie is oblivious to me and my camera because she has entered the powerful, enticing and enriching world of the book.
Maggie is fortunate because she lives is a house full of books and is surrounded by other “bookish” people, including her parents and her two older sisters. Maggie’s literacy is still visual but words, sentences, ideas and opinions will eventually follow.
We are lucky to still live in a world and society where opinions are (mostly) tolerated and considered and where (most) people are not working to ban access to books and the free expression of ideas.
Let’s hope that Maggie continues to grown up in a place like this.
