23.10.27 The Shepherd and His Flock

By Scott Shephard

Cund, Romania

On our last morning in the small town of Cund, Romania, I heard the distant ringing of bells and the bleating of sheep. When I stepped outside, this is what I found. The dog in front, wet and muddy from his earlier work in the field, was a real sheep dog. The man managing the herd, dressed in traditional hat, vest and shirt, was a real shepherd.

Such is life in rural Romania: it was time to move the herd to greener pastures.

The gallery includes photos that give you a sense of the layout and location of this small town. You will also see a church, which is no longer active. The red-roofed building shown in close-up is where our rooms for the night were located. The last photo is a residence with its yard planted almost entirely in cabbages. We saw harvested cabbages for sale along the road almost everywhere we went on our tour of Transylvania. Click on a photo to see a larger version.
