Winona, Minnesota, is one of many neat Minnesota towns with many beautiful churches. At one time in its history, Winona had more millionaires per capita than any other Minnesota town of its size. It would appear that some of that money was put into building beautiful churches.

In a contest among the faiths of Winona, I think the Polish Catholics won with the structure you are looking at here. I’ll direct you to Wikipedia to learn more about this architectural wonder and let the photos speak for themselves.

Incidentally, we stopped in Winona to get morning goodies at a well-reviewed bakery. But when we got there, we discovered a line of 15 or 20 people snaking out the door and down the sidewalk so we skipped that and explored the town instead.

Also incidentally, the actress Winona Ryder was born in Winona County and is named after the city. I remember her for her performance as the teenaged girl in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, though she’s done many things since, two of which earned her Academy Award nominations.

Finally, there is a Zesto in Winona. I now know of 4 Zestos in the Midwest: Watertown, Pierre, Omaha and Winona. Do you know of others?

Anyway, if you get the chance, you should visit Winona. And get to the Bloedow Bakery early.
