Tropical Dreams

This one dates back to 2002 and was taken somewhere south of Cancun, Mexico. I'm thinking of getting some kind of semi-opaque version of this to stick to the window I look out when I am working on my photos. Why not turn our back yard into an inviting tropical pool, palm trees and all? And you are all invited!Canon 1D 1/250s f/8.0 ISO250 34mm

Not From Around Here

Here's a thought: this bird is related to the common sparrows that are plentiful in South Dakota. The evolutionary difference between this colorful bird and a sparrow is the environment their ancestors developed in. In the case of the sparrow, there is plenty of brown. In the case of this Mexican bird, though, the tropics have much more color, such as Hawaiian shirts and colorful bikinis. It's all about blending in . . .

Pods

This is another shot from that trail that borders the empty stretch of beach just down from the resort zone south of Playa del Carmen Mexico.

Wind Swept

On a recent trip to Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, I sitting in a beach chair near this tree and noticed that the strong breeze was blowing the palm fronds back as if the tree were a tall, thin human with a full head of hair. But this human has green coconuts!!?? Is there any way of knowing when one might fall? A South Dakotan has very little natural experience with things like this.

A View From My Window?

The actual view from my window today shows bare tree, evergreens that seem less green than they did a month ago and a thin layer of snow and ice trying to cover what is left of the grass in our back yard. The scene you are looking at today appears only when I close my eyes and think of Mexico. . . .

December 25, 2009

After seeing yesterday's post, my wife told me not to post any more winter photos for a while. I guess I saw that as a bit of a challenge and so today I am defying her request. This one was taken last Christmas. But I'm not in our backyard here; we're in Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula. A blanket of white snow might be nice to see in photos but I would take palm fronds tinted by tropical sunlight any day.
