Deb looks like she’s striking a pose here but she is really just catching her breath and getting the big picture at the top of what is called the “Hieroglyphic Trail” near Gold Canyon, Arizona. “Hieroglyphic” is a misnomer in that the Egyptians never made it to Arizona - they had their own warm, dry desert climate to enjoy.
The petroglyphs are interesting to see and the trail, which rises several hundred feet from the parking lot to the top and is a 3 mile round trip, wasn’t all that difficult. As you can see, it was a perfect day, though I’m guessing that’s not all that unusual at this time of year in Arizona.
We were all left wondering how many of the petroglyphs are “real” given the accessibility of this site and the fact that some folks love adding their own touch to anthropological and archaeological sites like this. I told my brother-in-law that we should sneak up here at night and erect a monolith. He said he would go along with the plan as long as I carried it up the mountain. So it didn’t get done. Maybe tonight. . . .
