Irene Bernice Shephard (AKA Ibby) rarely gives me a chance for an informal portrait. On this occasion, our family was getting ready for two big events that involved her two sisters - a 1st communion and a baptism. Ibby was dressed and ready in the room where her older sister, Glenyce, was getting her hair curled for the Big Event.
Glenyce had been my main subject but when I saw the great window light on her, I turned my camera on Ibby. Instead of turning away from me, as she often does, she gave me this look. I’m sure I was thinking “good focus and good light” when I pressed the shutter release. What was Ibby thinking? Well, that’s the enigma of any portrait, isn’t it?
When I look at this portrait today, I’m not thinking about technical aspects. Instead, I marvel at the promise ahead for this beautiful child.
