09-16-12 The Empty Nest

My wife spotted this small nest with a single unhatched egg a while back. I checked the nest again this morning and found that the bird has apparently "flown the coop." I have no idea of what kind bird egg this is and of course I have no way of knowing whether the little bird is living a successful life or not. But I do like the late summer symbolism of the empty nest. It kind of like kids going off to college. . .

Windfall

I guess I kind of like the "lone gold leaf" theme. This time I found a single leaf stuck to the hood of a gray car.Other gold leaves:Aspen LeafFrozen In TimeBefore the Fall

Summer Blue

For the last two days it has been foggy and because of the snow cover, it has been mostly white. So I went looking for pictures of summer and this is what I found.I suspect that this is one of those photos that has more meaning to me than anyone else. (Translation: it's not a great photo but I like it.) But you do have to appreciate the pure blues of the sky and water in this photo. And you should have been with me the morning I took this. It was one of those quiet mornings on Lake Oahe that I dream about. It was cool but there was promise of warmth. The only sound was that of birds calling and of distant cattle lowing. You would think that a sailor would yearn for wind but as I'm sure I've said before, there is something pure and spiritual in floating quietly on a body of water in a place that is anything but empty.

Tropical Dreams

This one dates back to 2002 and was taken somewhere south of Cancun, Mexico. I'm thinking of getting some kind of semi-opaque version of this to stick to the window I look out when I am working on my photos. Why not turn our back yard into an inviting tropical pool, palm trees and all? And you are all invited!Canon 1D 1/250s f/8.0 ISO250 34mm

Reindeer & Bokeh

2011 12-06 Reindeer and BokehThis is the same tree as I used last year for my "Procession" post. But this year a reindeer dropped in to pose regally. And, yes, there is nice bokeh in the background.

Moonlight Ride

This photo is the second in a series I call "Taking Photos On a Bouncing Boat." The first photo shows up here, and, frankly, I like that one a lot more than this one. But as lakes turn to ice around here, I take some comfort in remembering this boat ride on a warm August night in Iowa.

Pink

As fall turns to winter, I start thinking about the transience of seasons. Where did summer go?

Place Setting

My mother-in-law meticulously plans and sets her Thanksgiving feast. I am always fortunate to have a place at the table.Canon 5DII 1/640s f/1.2 ISO500 50mm

Product Placement

What am I thankful for during this Thanksgiving season? Family and friends, of course, are most important. But high on my list are the great, baked sweet potatoes my mother-in-law makes.I especially like the "special sauce" that goes in to them.

Gig Harbor - One More Look

Gig Harbor has to be one of the more photogenic towns I have visited. I would love to go back again.
