Hvar Island

One Particular Harbor

There are thousands of "safe harbors" in the islands that spread out along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. This particular harbor (to paraphrase a song title by Jimmy Buffett) is on the west end of the Island of Hvar, which I have visited twice.I've mentioned in another post that Deb and I hope to charter a sailboat and cruise the Croatian islands but she tells me that we need our son, Captain Jon, aboard. I agree, but I'm not sure that our need for a precise travel schedule can mesh with Jon's free-form lifestyle. Our goal was to do it in the summer of 2011. We'll see. . . .

Hillside Town - Hvar Island

Here's another photo from our visit to Hvar Island a couple years ago. Once again, Deb and I ventured off the main road to find this photogenic locale. I'm afraid I don't know its name but I do know that it wasn't too far from the city we were staying in, which was Vrboska.

Safe Harbor

I apologize to all of my disciplined readers who may find that my blog appears at irregular times lately. It seems that when I get up these days, I start working on planning for my 8:30 history class instead of looking for a new photo to post. I'll try to do both in the morning from now on.Anyway, this photo was taken in a small village on the island of Hvar, Croatia. Like many small villages on islands along the Dalmatian coast, Vrboska is scenic, inviting and a good place for sailors to spend some time. Deb and I arrived via ferry and automobile, but maybe next summer we'll sail here. . .

06-14-09 Fishing Net Repair - Vrboska, Croatia (Hvar Island)

Deb and I were enjoying our last evening strolling the back streets of the small port village of Vrboska, Croatia, when this man spotted us. He spoke very little English but tried to talk to us anyway. At one point, he signed for us to come inside his shop, the floor of which was covered in piles of fishing nets. He said, "I am professional" and sat down and began to show us how he fixed nets. His pride and his desire to demonstrate his skill were clearly apparent.

This is a very strongly lit photo - but I didn't use flash. Instead, the man helped me by turning on the flourescent lights that lit his shop and (conveniently) sat in the doorway, which was flooded by the pure late afternoon sunlight reflected off the wall of a fortress located a few yards from his door.
