If you get down on your knees and look at the nether regions of this fern, this is what you see. At least that's what I saw in 2010 when I took this photo. I have been back to the fern room in the Como Park Conservatory and have not seen this same fern in this particular state.
I don't know enough about ferns to know exactly what these black spots are but I think they have something to do with reproduction. And I'll leave it at that. . . .
