Scott Shephard
Sometimes the photos we like the best include the qualifier “but you had to be there.” This may be one of those pictures. My friend Scott P and I had been exploring north of Deerfield Lake in western South Dakota when I decided that I wanted to try a little drone photography. As I prepared for the flight, Scott ambled off through a field of grass. I photographed the valley and an old abandoned house and was flying back towards the take-off point when I noticed that for some reason Scott had decided to strike a pose. And so I photographed him.
This happens to be one of my favorite photos of 2018. I like it not because it is compositionally striking or because it has some kind of deep meaning. I like it because . . . Well, you had to be there.
