In many parts of our state trees are the exception, not the rule. That’s especially true where I was a couple mornings ago. Aside from shelter belts, the only trees that exist are volunteers or trees that were planted decades ago to shade farm houses, which no longer exist.
I would also suggest that we tend to take trees for granted - especially in winter when leaves are absent. But this trio begged for attention when I flew my drone above them on a frosty, magical morning. The snow and frost are ephemeral but the trees are true flatland survivors quietly waiting to do the important work that all trees do.
