03-17-13 Late Summer

I suspect that there is nothing all that special about prairie grass, unless, of course, you live where there is no prairie. Or, like me, live where there is no living grass right now. And, as I know I've said, when I am feeling SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) kick in, I go looking for photos I took in better weather.This clump of grass lived on the bluffs overlooking the Little Bend of the Missouri River on Lake Oahe. In late July, 2012, I took close to 50 photos of this grass one morning, mainly because the wind was gusty and the grass wouldn't sit still. I imagine that taking photos of children might be like that. Though children offer considerably greater diversity, don't they?

01-06-12 Center Lake

Here's another one from my distant, digital past. I remember taking this photo, along with about 100 others of these reeds. I liked the reflection, of course, but I also like the way the tops of the reeds curve. Finally, I also like the contrast between the brown of the plants and the blue of the lake.

11-10-12 Golden Grass

Photographers call the hour just after sunrise and just before sunset the "golden hour." I think that prairie grass in late summer is inherently beautiful but the golden hour certainly flatters this patch of prairie grass.

Shades of Gray

I was back at Lonesome Lake this morning looking for photo opportunities. As I have already admitted, I am amazed with the fascinating texture of the prairie grass here. And so I took more photos.This is an HDR picture, first processed in the HDR Pro software in Photoshop and then converted to black and white using a NIK set of filters. This is mostly a "real" photo, though if you look at the trees along the upper right part of the photo, they look a little ghostly. Don't ask me why.

Electric

This is another photo from our recent trip to California. After I got done taking a few broad shots from the top of Mulholland Drive, I turned my camera towards some long grass that was illuminated by the strong morning sun.

03-22-09 Wild Grass

This is a good example of something as prosaic as wild grass growing in a country ditch becoming more interesting with the right lighting. In this case I was heading to an old farmstead I like to photograph when I noticed how the low sun seemed to bring the heads of the grass to life.

Like the gold oak leaf posted here several days ago, this grass wouldn't have caught your eye if you had seen it from the sunny side.
